HEN I TEACH introductory stand-up
paddleboarding (SUP) classes, learners
often say, “SUP is the best summer activity!” or “I’m going to spend all summer
on a SUP!” While I don’t disagree with
those statements, many people are surprised to learn
that I don’t stash away my paddleboard when summer ends—I SUP all year round.
For me, SUP offers more than just a fun way
to float out on the water; it is my favourite way
to explore and enjoy our waterways. Being on a
paddleboard puts me right at water level, with no
hull preventing me from dipping my legs in or fully
diving in for a dip when I want to cool off.
While most people spend time in and around water only during the warmer months (acknowledging
that getting out in winter requires more experience
and pricey gear), stand-up paddleboarding and surfing (yes, we get waves in the Great Lakes!) in all four
seasons provides the unique opportunity to meaningfully connect with water. It inspires us to think of
our waterways beyond summer and raises awareness
about the need to protect these precious blue spaces
every day, all year round.

paddleboarding
in the Great Lakes

Spring thaw
As spring is ushered in by winter’s thaw, the tinkling
of melting ice and the renewed flow of rivers often
serve as the first sounds that water-sport season is
approaching.
For me, spring means being able to explore magical paddling spots like the Minesing Wetlands, where
the higher water levels allow better access, which can
otherwise be challenging to navigate. It also marks
the reemergence of early bird canoeists, kayakers, and
pack rafters from their winter hibernation.
Summer splash
One of the joys of the hotter months, when the lake
water starts warming up, is taking out my dogs on
my SUP (since there aren’t drysuits for dogs yet!).
