Annacis Water Tunnel
$450 million
METRO VANCOUVER is constructing
a new water supply tunnel deep
under the Fraser River. The Annacis
Water Supply Tunnel between the
City of New Westminster and the
City of Surrey is one of the five new
marine crossings in the region built
to withstand a major earthquake.
When complete, it will help ensure
the continued delivery of clean, safe
drinking water to the communities
south of the Fraser River well into
the future. Construction is underway
and is expected to be completed in
2028. The project involves building
an entry shaft in Surrey and an
exit shaft in New Westminster and
using a tunnel boring machine to
excavate the 2.3-kilometre tunnel.
Once completed, a 2.6m diameter
steel water main will be installed
inside the shaft and tunnel which
will be connected to the regional
water distribution system. Following
construction, both shaft sites will be
restored with green space. •

Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System
$400 million
THE CITY of Toronto, with support from the Government of
Canada, is making a significant investment in stormwater
infrastructure to protect the Fairbank-Silverthorn community from basement and surface flooding. The project
will construct a three-kilometre long and 4.5-metre diameter storm trunk sewer, 17-km length of storm collector
sewers and install 325 inlet control devices to control
stormwater going to catch basins. When construction
is complete, the new infrastructure will help to reduce
sewer backups and basement flooding for more than 4,645
homes and provide flood protection to a 140-hectare area.
The first major contract to construct the storm trunk
sewer and some storm collector sewers is underway.
Construction is 60 per cent complete. All 20 shafts are
now constructed and microtunneling is 90 per cent
complete. The 4.5-metre diameter storm tunnel is
constructed using a 5.3m diameter Tunnel Boring Machine
(TBM) that was manufactured in France. In May 2023, the
TBM was launched through a 40m deep shaft located in
Fairbank memorial park. Contract 2 is anticipated to be
completed in 2025. •
