DRINKING WATER
METRO VANCOUVER is planning to construct a new water supply tunnel
deep under Stanley Park. The new tunnel will replace an existing water
main that was built in the 1930s, has experienced leaks, and is near the end
of its service life.
This project is part of Metro Vancouver’s regional plan to upgrade the
existing drinking water system to meet the needs of the growing region.
The project involves the construction of a new water supply tunnel,
designed to provide increased capacity to meet future water demand as
well as to meet current seismic standards.
The new tunnel will be 1.4 km long, approximately 4.5 m in diameter
and include a 2.65 m diameter steel water main and will connect to two
new underground valve chambers. The project has been designed to
minimize construction footprint, minimize impacts to the park, and reduce
construction impacts to park users and residents. •
