PERVIOUS CONCRETE is a durable paving material with a matrix of
interconnected voids, allowing water to pass through the surface. This
technology supports heavy traffic loads while providing stormwater
management benefits.
Applications:
Ideal for parking lots, streets, and residential driveways, pervious concrete
is suited for areas where both stormwater management and durability are
required.
Frost, thaw, repeat
The University of Waterloo conducted a comprehensive study across five
field sites in Canada, evaluating the performance of pervious concrete
pavement in cold climates. This research explored critical factors such
as planning, design, construction, and maintenance. Results indicated
that, with proper construction techniques, pervious concrete can maintain
its permeability and structural integrity through freeze-thaw cycles. The
study also emphasized the importance of surface compaction and joint
placement for optimal performance. Maintenance, particularly surface
washing, was identified as key to preserving permeability over time.
Why it’s a good option for Canadian climates:
Pervious concrete can endure freeze-thaw conditions when designed
with the appropriate aggregate mix and air voids. However, the use of
deicing salts should be minimized to extend its lifespan and maintain
performance.
