METRO VANCOUVER is constructing a new
water supply tunnel deep under Burrard Inlet,
east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge. This
project is one of 昀椀ve new regional water supply
tunnels that are being designed to meet current seismic standards to ensure the reliable
delivery of drinking water in the region in the
event of a major earthquake. When complete,
the tunnel will also increase the capacity of the
existing system to meet the long-term needs of
the growing population •.

THE CITY of Toronto, with support from the
Government of Canada, is making a signi昀椀cant
investment in stormwater infrastructure to
protect the Fairbank-Silverthorn community
from basement and surface 昀氀ooding. The project will construct a three-kilometre long and
4.5-metre diameter storm trunk sewer, 17-km
length of storm collector sewers and install
325 inlet control devices to control stormwater
going to catch basins. When construction is
complete, the new infrastructure will help to
reduce sewer backups and basement 昀氀ooding
for more than 4,645 homes and provide 昀氀ood
protection to a 140-hectare area.
The 昀椀rst major contract to construct the
storm trunk sewer and some storm collector sewers is underway. Construction is 60
per cent complete. All 20 shafts are now
constructed and microtunneling is 90 per cent
complete. •
