Water Priorities Are Evolving
WELCOME TO the second edition of Water Canada’s Top 50 Water Projects!
Building on the success of our inaugural issue, this year’s list highlights another
impressive array of water infrastructure projects across Canada, representing a
combined investment of more than $38 billion. It’s clear that water management
remains a top priority as communities grow and infrastructure ages, with a
strong focus on upgrading and replacing wastewater treatment plants, drinking
water facilities, reservoirs, flood protection systems, and supply tunnels.
As with our first edition, wastewater treatment projects continue to dominate the list
due to their scale and cost. However, significant initiatives in water supply, treatment
upgrades, and irrigation infrastructure across Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan
showcase Canada’s broad commitment to strengthening its water resilience.
Compiling this year’s Top 50 was once again a monumental effort. Our key criteria
remained the same: projects needed to have secured funding and be in at least the
design stage. We’ve also reaffirmed our commitment to focusing on wastewater,
drinking water, stormwater, and conservation—leaving hydroelectric projects outside
our scope. But this year, we took an even closer look at the broader impact of water
initiatives, recognizing that crucial water projects aren’t always the largest or most
expensive. Conservation programs, pollution mitigation efforts, and wastewater
surveillance projects all play a vital role in shaping Canada’s water future.
The second edition of the Water Canada Top 50 list is more than just an update—
it’s a reflection of how water priorities are evolving. We anticipate that future
editions will continue to grow and adapt, incorporating innovative projects that
address climate change, population growth, agricultural needs, flood mitigation,
and cutting-edge technology. And most importantly, we hope this list continues
to be shaped by the water community itself. Your feedback and contributions are
invaluable in ensuring we capture the most impactful projects each year.
This year’s edition brings an exciting lineup of new projects that highlight the evolving
landscape of water infrastructure across Canada. From ambitious wastewater treatment
upgrades to innovative irrigation systems and cutting-edge water supply improvements,
these additions reflect the country’s ongoing commitment to resilience and sustainability.
Many of these projects integrate advanced technologies, climate adaptation strategies,
and community-driven solutions, showcasing a future-focused approach to water
management. Their inclusion not only broadens the scope of our list but also underscores
the diversity of challenges and solutions shaping Canada’s water sector today.
Through the countless conversations we’ve had with municipal water managers, project
leaders, and industry professionals, one thing remains constant: the immense pride people
take in their water projects. The enthusiasm and dedication we encountered were truly
inspiring, reinforcing just how critical these initiatives are to Canadian communities.
We are proud to present the second edition of Water Canada’s (and your)
Top 50 Water Projects. We hope you find it as insightful and inspiring as we did
while putting it together. Thank you for being part of this journey, and we look
forward to seeing how the list continues to evolve in the years to come.
