DRINKING WATER
THE CITY of Regina has kicked o昀昀 the third year of its $167-million, construction project, which will provide a long-term plan for the city’s water
distribution network to accommodate growth up to a population equivalent
of 310,000. To address pressure and supply issues on the east side of the
city and improve system redundancy, the project design includes a new
water pumping station and two 42.5-megalitre water storage reservoirs
complete with a new 8.4-kilometre water supply line. The implementation
of the project will allow the city to continue meeting current and future

THE WELLAND Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
supplies potable water to Welland, Pelham, and parts
of Thorold. Originally built in 1910, it has undergone
multiple upgrades to improve capacity and e昀케ciency.
The plant sources water from Lake Erie via the Welland Canal and has a total capacity of 102.3 million
litres per day, serving around 50,000 residents.
Recent upgrades include a new reservoir, UV/
High Lift Pump Station, substation, and standby
generator to enhance reliability. A new transmission main and water/sewer main replacement
project is set for April–December 2025. These improvements ensure a sustainable and high-quality
water supply for the region. •
