and capacity.
Key Upgrades:
• Aeration System: Upgrading to 昀椀ne bubble di昀昀users for better oxygen
transfer.
• Membrane Aerated Bio昀椀lm Reactor (MABR): Enhancing nitri昀椀cation
using SUEZ ZeeLung technology.
• Blower System: Installing new turbo blowers for improved aeration.
• Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) Management: New pumps and direct
sludge transfer to the trunk sewer.
• Electrical Upgrades: New substation and electrical houses to support
modernized systems. •

Kitchener WWTP
$25.5 million
THE KITCHENER Wastewater Treatment Plant
has been undergoing signi昀椀cant upgrades
since 2010 to enhance its e昀케ciency and
improve the quality of water discharged into
the Grand River. A key component of these
improvements includes the replacement of
aging clari昀椀er mechanisms. The Fujiwara
technology is a monorail-type sludge removal
system that consists of a series of scraper
blades attached to a tank 昀氀oor rail system.
The scraper blades push sludge to a hopper
located at the end of the primary clari昀椀er
tanks. On the return journey, the scraper
blades rotate to minimize impact on sludge
settling. Key advantages include low maintenance requirements, low pro昀椀le to allow for
future odour control, and the technology can
be retro昀椀tted into existing travelling bridgetype primary clari昀椀ers. •
