Canada’s Top 50 Water Projects
WELCOME TO Water Canada’s inaugural Top 50 issue of current
water projects! With a combined amount of more than $41 billion
in projects accounted for, it’s safe to say that water and water
infrastructure is a priority across the country. As populations
rise and infrastructure ages, replacing or upgrading our current
wastewater treatment plants, drinking water facilities, reservoirs,
flood protection, and supply tunnels are becoming top priorities
for regional jurisdictions. The majority of these projects focus on
wastewater treatment, by far the most expensive tickets on the
list. But other projects such as irrigation infrastructure in southern
Saskatchewan, flood protection and waterfront upgrades in Toronto,
and an off-stream reservoir in Calgary are also near the top.
Rounding up the country’s top water projects was a monumental
task. Our main criteria required funding be in place for the project and
the design stage was underway, at the very least. You may notice the
list doesn’t include hydroelectric projects—we made a decision to stick
to our cornerstone content of wastewater, drinking water, stormwater,
and conservation. But during our list compilation we realized
something else: Important water projects are not necessarily the bigticket infrastructure projects. Wastewater surveillance, conservation
projects, pollution mitigation, and a host of other water-related
initiatives are also important.
It’s with that in mind the inaugural Water Canada Top 50 list is a
starting point, a living, breathing list that will evolve from year to
year and expand as more investment is made in important water
projects that address population growth, climate change, agricultural
challenges, conservation, flood mitigation, innovation, and technology.
Truth is, we’re hoping in the future this isn’t our list, but also your list.
We encourage your feedback for next year. Tell us about your upcoming
projects, your role in them, and who the key players are. Together, let's
celebrate the big "wins" of Canada's water sector.
Another benefit of dozens, if not hundreds of phone calls and emails,
was connecting even further with the water community. It was refreshing
to connect with municipal water managers, project leaders, and
communications departments to collect the information.
A common thread we noticed of those who submitted images
and project descriptions was the pride in their projects and how
they benefited their respective communities. The enthusiasm was
encouraging.
So, here it is. Water Canada’s (and your) inaugural Top 50 list.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. •
