“PARTNERSHIPS” mean everything to me. They
should, considering the word is part of my job title.
Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about the
value of industry collaborations. No two partnerships
are equal. Some are good, some are bad, and ultimately,
what you contribute is more important than what you get out of it. That might
seem counterintuitive, but the reality is that when you contribute to your community or industry, you’re also contributing to yourself.
The Canadian water industry coming together to host the International Water
Association’s World Water Congress & Exhibition in Toronto from August 11-15
is an excellent example of what a successful collaboration looks like.
Two years ago, my 16-year-old son and I boarded a flight to Copenhagen as
part of a Canadian contingent tasked with enticing the international water community to come to IWA 2024 in Toronto. We were in good company, alongside
representatives from industry associations, academia, government, the private
sector, and municipalities.
The relationships we fostered on that trip far outweighed the time and money
we invested to help. From that single trip, Water Canada gained three new advisory board members, experts for our Downstream student networking events,
judges for our annual awards program, and friendships that make attending
industry events more fun than work.
Frankly, we did very little work compared to the heavy lifting that Toronto
Water, the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association, the Local Organizing
Committee, and many others did to host the world in Toronto.
The results speak for themselves: more than 2,700 delegates from 108 countries came together with the same goal of conserving, protecting, and treating
our most precious natural resource. There were more than 100 technical sessions,
85 workshops, 50+ business forums, and 8 special sessions. Now that’s what I
call a partnership!
The numbers are impressive, but the memories, the relationships, and yes, the
partnerships that evolve from this one conference will continue to take shape for
months and years to come.
We’ve gotten very good at communicating globally via email, text, Zoom,
Slack, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and a hundred other digital platforms, but the
relationships we form when working side-by-side on a common goal bond us in
a way that only a shared experience can.
I know you’re busy, but the time you take to join a committee, volunteer at an
industry event, or mentor a young professional will come back to you tenfold.
“Stronger together” may seem a bit cliché, but the results are undeniable!
