IN EARLY OCTOBER, while temperatures back home
began to cool, I silently paid homage to the inventor of
air conditioning, as I squeezed into the third row at the
New Orleans Ernest N. Memorial Convention Centre.
The room buzzed with colleagues, both old and new,
greeting each other in the dim light of the massive conference hall. We
were settling in for the opening session of WEFTEC, the Water Environment Federation’s Technical Exhibition and Conference.
An impressive succession of Indigenous leaders and local politicians
took the stage. Each welcoming us and sharing their perspective on the
current state of North America’s water and environmental challenges. Then
Aimeé Killeen, outgoing president of WEF, took the stage.
Aimeé is a storyteller.
Not only did she share her sun-drenched tales of growing up in Louisian, she also reminded everyone in that vast hall that we each have a water
story to tell. “This event is about our collective water stories. Water stories
of the past told by people here on the stage today. Water stories that have
shaped our lives for the good, and the bad. Stories told through music.
And stories told through pictures. And new stories that are about to be
made in the coming days…”
And she’s right. I have yet to meet anyone in Canada’s water sector — or
from around the world — who have found their way into this industry
without a meaningful story. I’ve met professionals who came to Canada
from water-scarce nations that marvel at simply turning on a tap to enjoy
cool, clean, safe drinking water. Others who’ve lived in Canada all their
lives share memories of decades-old boil water advisories.
There’s a long list of swimmers, triathletes, cottagers, boating enthusiasts, tadpole catchers, frog hunters, and even one or two whose water
journey began with the navy. And there are those who stumbled into the
industry, only to become captivated by the science, technology, and environmental impact of water.
It doesn’t matter how you found your way to Canada’s water sector.
We’re glad you’re here. And, in the spirit of keeping Aimeé’s message alive,
I invite all of you to share your own personal stories with us. Each issue of
Water Canada in the new year will feature one of these stories.
Afterall it is our collective story that will shape the future of water.
So what’s your water origin story? How did our most precious natural
resource captivate you? Send your stories to me at corinne@actualmedia.ca
