Canada Water Agency
Trash Skimmer: City of Richmond
PRIME MINISTER Justin Trudeau has
announced the Budget 2023 investment to
protect Canada’s freshwater by creating
the Canada Water Agency in Winnipeg.
This agency will cooperate with provinces,
territories, Indigenous Peoples, local
authorities, and scientists to maintain water
safety and management. One of its initial
tasks will be modernizing the Canada Water
Act to account for climate change effects
and Indigenous rights.
Budget 2023 also broadens the
Freshwater Action Plan. It supports areaspecific measures to protect Canada’s
freshwater reserves — from Lake Winnipeg
to the Great Lakes, to the Mackenzie River.
The Plan seeks to improve water quality
and mitigate climate change impacts via
monitoring, assessment, and restoration.
The Canada Water Agency will spearhead
the execution of key Freshwater Action Plan
elements.
CANADIAN COAST GUARD SHIP GETS FIRST
EVER ONBOARD CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE
WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM
AFTER NEARLY a decade of collaboration
with Terragon Environmental Technologies, a Montréal-based clean-tech
firm, the Canadian Coast Guard
has launched the first-ever Sewage
Wastewater Electrochemical Treatment
Technology System (WETT-S) on the
Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS)
Earl Grey.
Unlike traditional systems, this Canadian-made wastewater treatment technology
does not use disposable filters, eliminating
around 75 per cent more suspended solids
and effectively removing heavy metals and
harmful particles. Residual waste is stored
in special shipboard tanks for environmentally friendly disposal.
As part of its fleet renewal plan, the
Canadian Coast Guard integrates green
technology into its vessels and collaborates
with Canadian green industry leaders, like
Terragon, to share best practices in vessel
design and engineering. This represents a
significant step in incorporating sustainable technologies into Canadian Coast
Guard ships, improving their environmental safety.
“The adoption of cleaner wastewater
treatment technology on the CCGS Earl
Grey is a significant stride towards preserving our coastlines for future generations,”
stated the Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian
Coast Guard. “We anticipate wider use of
such innovative clean technologies on our
Coast Guard vessels.”
