TOP 50 UPDATE
Progress Continues on
Stanley Park Water Tunnel
CONSTRUCTION PREPARATIONS for the Stanley Park Water
Supply Tunnel are progressing at all three shaft sites. This major
project will replace a 1930s-era water main with a new, earthquake-resistant tunnel to support growing water demands in
Vancouver, Richmond, and Delta.
At the Chilco Street shaft, site clearing and grading are underway, along with improvements to traffic flow. A temporary
pedestrian and cyclist path was in place through mid-to-late April,
after which a longer-term detour will be established. Permanent
fencing and noise barriers will be installed by early May. Access to
the Community Garden remains open throughout construction.
At the Centre shaft, the old animal hospital has been demolished, and office facilities are being set up. Over at the Burrard
Inlet shaft, crews are clearing the site and installing fencing, with a
reroute of the Tunnel Trail coming soon.
These efforts mark key steps toward enhancing the region’s water
infrastructure and long-term resilience.
