Metro Vancouver nears completion of
Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel
Metro Vancouver
CONSTRUCTION of Metro Vancouver’s
Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel
is nearly complete, marking a major
milestone in the region’s ongoing effort
to enhance drinking water capacity and
seismic resilience.
The 6.5-metre-diameter tunnel runs
more than one kilometre beneath the
Burrard Inlet, connecting Burnaby and
the District of North Vancouver. It replaces three aging watermains—installed
between the 1940s and 1970s—that
were nearing the end of their service life
and vulnerable to earthquake damage.
Inside the tunnel, three new steel
watermains are capable of delivering
more than one million litres of drinking
water per day to Vancouver, Burnaby,
Richmond, New Westminster, Delta,
and parts of Coquitlam and Surrey. The
infrastructure is designed to withstand a
one-in-10,000-year earthquake.
“Building this tunnel under the
Burrard Inlet was a massive project and is
another great example of the critical infrastructure that Metro Vancouver delivers
for this region,” said Mike Hurley, chair of
Metro Vancouver’s board of directors.
The tunnel was excavated using a slurry
tunnel boring machine through mixed
ground conditions. Metro Vancouver is
now connecting the new mains to the
existing system, with full service expected
by 2028. Restoration work at Second Narrows Park (Montrose Park) in Burnaby is
already underway.
