NEW • WASTEWATER
THE PROJECT will modernize the plant’s
secondary treatment systems, replacing aging
infrastructure, improving reliability, and plant
performance. The project will also improve
operations, efficiency, and reduce greenhouse
gas emissions for the plant, which serves more
than 650,000 residents.
The project will be delivered using a
Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) model,
marking the first time Toronto has adopted this
approach. The city says the CMAR model will
foster stronger collaboration and accountability
in the delivery of large-scale capital projects. •

Humber WWTP — North Plant
Secondary Treatment Upgrades • $34,000,000
WASTEWATER
THE KITCHENER WASTEWATER Treatment Plant has been
undergoing significant upgrades since 2010 to enhance its efficiency
and improve the quality of water discharged into the Grand River. A
key component of these improvements includes the replacement of
aging clarifier mechanisms.
The Fujiwara technology is a monorail-type sludge removal system
that consists of a series of scraper blades attached to a tank floor rail
system. The scraper blades push sludge to a hopper located at the
end of the primary clarifier tanks. On the return journey, the scraper
blades rotate to minimize impact on sludge settling. Key advantages
include low maintenance requirements, low profile to allow for future
odour control, and the technology can be retrofitted into existing
travelling bridge type primary clarifiers. •

Inverness Wastewater Treatment
Plant Replacement • $24,000,000
THIS MULTI-PROJECT initiative will replace the
outdated wastewater treatment facility in the community of Inverness with a modernized facility that will
accommodate continued residential and commercial
growth. The wastewater treatment facility replacement
will provide more efficient treatment. The project also
included the Outfall Partial Replacement Project, which
involved the replacement of a section of the outfall pipe
that safely transports treated effluent from the treatment plant into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Upgrades and renewal of the water distribution
network and sanitary collection systems on Central
Avenue and Veteran’s Memorial Court are also
scheduled. •
